Description
The Manufacturing Engineer at Daylight Solutions is responsible for preparing the factory to launch new products both onsite and through contract manufacturing, while supporting sustained volume manufacturing operations. These products are based on the company’s IP in miniaturized, tunable, mid-infrared laser engines and associated electronics, which range from general purpose Laser Control Systems for research markets to customized electronic modules designed to specific OEM customer applications.
This self-directed person will lead cross-functional teams and apply seasoned engineering methodologies and expertise in manufacturing to develop manufacturing processes, ensure requirements have been defined, documented and implemented, and that program objectives are attainable and sustained throughout the manufacturing life cycle. In addition this position will provide support to manufacturing to satisfy the quality, cost, throughput and yield requirements for released products in a rapid growth environment.
The position requires a BS in Engineering and appropriate manufacturing experience, laser, optical or semiconductor manufacturing background preferred.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- As a member of the Manufacturing Engineering Team, responsible for New Product Introduction including transferring new products from Product Development into manufacturing.
- Apply leadership skills to effect process changes in a team environment.
- Independently research and implement innovative solutions to technical problems
- Use lean and manufacturing engineering principles to design and layout production lines, work cells, manufacturing stations, and other production equipment. Contribute to the development of a lean culture.
- Develop and maintain routings, bill of material, tool standards, shop floor control methods, process updates and execute engineering changes.
- Create and conduct test validation plans to qualify new or improved materials, processes, or products.
- Design and implement manufacturing test and assembly fixtures.
- Design and implement process and production control methods, including identification, tracking and analysis of key process variables.
- Establish and document manufacturing processes in support of new products and design changes.
- Work with design engineers to ensure manufacturability and testability of new products (DFM/DFT).
- Assist with the design and implementation of custom manufacturing equipment
- Use mechanical, optical, laser and electrical knowledge to troubleshoot manufacturing process and equipment issues as they arise.
- Apply seasoned engineering knowledge to understand and improve manufacturing processes.
- Construct and execute controlled experiments (including DOE and Gage R & R) to address yield, quality and equipment issues; and drive solutions into a production environment.
- Confer with suppliers to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluate products according to specifications and quality standards.
- Utilize formal project management tools where required to assure performance, budget, and schedule requirements are met.
- Integrate information technologies where appropriate with shop floor processes. Set up online data collection, analysis and feedback to achieve superior process performance.
- Create plans and drive requirements for the implementation of 5S, housekeeping and cleanliness standards throughout manufacturing.
Qualifications
- BS degree in Engineering or Physics and at least 5 years of experience.
- Proven abilities in developing, documenting and establishing new processes within manufacturing and across departmental lines.
- Training and experience with Six-Sigma and continuous process improvement. Prefer a Six-Sigma certification.
- Proven abilities in using advanced statistics and quality tools (SPC, Gage R & R, DOE, etc) to analyze and solve mfg problems and for continuous improvement efforts.
- Proven abilities in setting up information technology in manufacturing.
- Engineering experience with lasers, optics or semi-conductors desirable.
- Experience in the defense industry or other highly regulated industries
- Familiarity with GMP and ISO 9001
- AutoCAD, Solid Works or other CAD software experience is a plus.
- Previous experience/certification in lean manufacturing highly desirable.
