Description
The Senior Electro-Optical Engineer (Manufacturing) provides the technical and project interface between R&D and Manufacturing to facilitate the transition of new products into the production environment. Using their engineering expertise in manufacturing and product development, this self-directed person will be responsible for leading the assembly, qualification, and test of new products based on the company’s IP in miniaturized, tunable, mid-infrared laser engines and associated electronics. In the manufacturing engineering role ensures that manufacturing processes and requirements have been defined, documented, and implemented; and that quality objectives are attainable and sustained throughout the manufacturing life cycle. In the product development role provides evaluation and input on electro-optical designs and assembly methods to ensure the manufacturability and testability of the product is realized and resolve critical issues related to design, quality and process.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Responsible to interface with R&D engineers to transfer products and processes associated with laser designs and assemblies into production
- Develop test plans and perform initial characterization and qualification studies
- Design custom inspection instruments/equipment/fixtures to test electro-optical (EO) systems performance and to provide process feedback in manufacturing
- Work with design engineers to ensure manufacturability and testability of new products (DFM/DFT)
- Develop improved processes and tooling for the manufacture of lasers and EO sub assemblies
- Document and train production technicians and managers on assembly processes associated with lasers and EO sub assemblies
- Support ongoing product testing improvements and develop and or lead the development of automated test routines
- Institute incoming inspection, burn-in and QA processes associated with critical components
- Develop and maintain routings, bill of material, tool standards, process updates and execute engineering changes
- Lead environmental test and evaluation of products and processes to determine lifetime and failure modes and then implement corrective actions to enhance product lifetime and reliability
- Apply seasoned engineering knowledge to understand and continually improve manufacturing processes
- Conduct design of experiments to perform root cause analysis
- Participate in the design of optical subassemblies for new products/product improvements
- Manage a project plan including key deliverables, timeline, and budget
- Interact with scientists and other technical staff to understand system level problems that present themselves and then undertake rapid containment and mitigation re-design efforts
Qualifications
- MS/BS degree in Engineering or Physics and 5 years of experience.
- Must have at least 3 years of experience in an optical/laser related industry
- Strong knowledge of lasers, electro-optics, laser beam propagation and laboratory equipment
- In depth understanding of optical test and characterization equipment
- Experience in developing, implementing, and qualifying custom manufacturing test equipment and instrumentation to ensure product performance
- Good understanding of mechanical, electrical, and optical designs and components, and their interactions in IR imaging systems
- Skills in programming highly desirable (Labview, C++, etc.)
- Experience with Statistical Process Control and DOE techniques is a plus
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and eligible to obtain secret security clearance
