Portable laser sources operating in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) are highly desirable for many applications, including standoff detection, free-space communications and active illumination with thermal infrared imaging cameras. This class of applications demands ultra-lightweight, rugged packaging with long battery life for extended operation.
Daylight Solutions has commercialized a suite of Thermal Laser Pointers™, Thermal Laser Illuminators™, and Thermal Laser Beacons™ to address requirements in portable handheld mid-IR illumination. Available at wavelengths ranging from 3 µm to 20 µm, these devices can provide over 100 mW of output power in a package weighing less than 2 ounces. Our Thermal Laser technology has also been designed to run from simple AA or CR123A battery packs, making them ideal sources for ultra-portable applications. Furthermore, because they are based on Daylight Solutions' proprietary External Cavity Quantum Cascade Laser (ECqcL™) technology, these devices can be directly modulated at 100 MHz to 1 GHz bandwidths to provide high data rate communications.
